The Sunday Reeds are an alternative rock/pop band formed in 2008 by Romana Ashton and Drew Jones in Melbourne. The pair, originally from Queensland, formed the group due to a mutual love of alternative ’80s and ’90s music and a love of all great pop/rock music since the ’50s. Their first release ‘Drowning in History’ (2009) was through UK indie label Squirrel Records where they played as a three piece with Romana playing bass.

Their second release ‘Dark Rainbows’ (2011) was also released through Squirrel Records and saw the band playing shows in the UK at the end of 2010 to attentive audiences in places such as London, Brighton and Leeds. The band’s work has been reviewed by NME, Beat, Rave, Time-Out and numerous other music papers and blogs (too numerous to name here). Their first release ‘Drowning in History’ was number 4 in 4zzz’s (Brisbane) top ten albums of that month and The Sunday Reed’s releases have been played on various radio stations in Australia and overseas including Triple R, PBS, 4ZZZ, 3D, Dandelion Radio (UK) and many others.

They have played extensively in Melbourne, Brisbane and in the UK. In 2011 the group changed their line-up and Andy Dawson (drums) was replaced by Jane Sertori from Ballarat band Pioneers of Good Science. Jesse Lynch, also from the same band. was brought in to play bass for the group. Now a four-piece, The Sunday Reeds are set to release their new single ‘Kill this Party’/’Fall from Grace’ through their own label Heartgun Records in association with Squirrel Records (UK). The single is just a taste of a forthcoming album that is expected to be released in 2013.

    The Sunday Reeds

The Sunday Reeds are a noise-pop post-punk band formed by Romana Ashton and Drew Jones in Melbourne. With a common love of alternative 1980s and 90s artists, Ashton and Jones formed The Sunday Reeds, naming the band after Sunday Reed, a prominent arts patron of the 1930s and 40s.

Their sound is a raw and potent blend of melody and dissonance:

Ghosts of matinee idols crash a house party thrown by bored rich kids with nothing to lose but their minds.

Hopeless romantics sway and shimmy in the dark and wait for the end.

Silent films project into a swimming pool.

Lounging starlets watch a lightning storm swallow the night sky through Ray-Bans.

In an upstairs bedroom, heartbreak meets hysteria and makes a suicide pact.
